Pope Zephyrinus was the bishop of Rome from 199 to his death on 20 December 217. He was born in Rome, and succeeded Victor I. Upon his death on 20 December 217, he was succeeded by his principal advisor, Callixtus I. He is known for combating heresies and defending the divinity of Christ.

Born in Rome, the son of Habundius, he served as pope for 17 years. During his reign, severe persecution of the church continued until the death of Emperor Septimius Severus in 211. The persecution was more severe in the provinces than in Rome. Zephyrino supported persecuted believers both materially and mentally. In addition, he defended Christianity against the emerging heresy and apostasy. His opponents were Marcion, Praxis, Valentinus, and the Montanians.
